Over the last half term our Reception class have been looking at Superheroes as their topic. In their DT lessons they have been making their own cities for their Superheroes to protect and save. They began the process by designing and painting the base and did this by making a birds eye view of a landscape with water and roads. They then painted unfolded boxes, added bricks and textures as well as cutting and sticking on doors and windows. They then made their own pipe cleaner Superhero to fly around their city. Great work Reception! #TGSTogether #JourneyOfDiscovery #DiscoverTheWorld #TGSPathways #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Year 13 have been looking at the use of immobilised enzymes in Industry as part of a topic on Biotechnology. Students made some alginate beads containing the enzyme called lactase, the beads end up looking like miniature frogspawn! The beads are then put into a syringe and milk is added to them. The enzyme hydrolyses the lactose sugar in the milk into its components - glucose and galactose thus making the milk lactose free. They then checked the method had worked using glucose dipsticks with the milk providing a negative test (pink) before coming into contact with the beads but a positive result (purple) afterwards. Immobilisation of the enzyme in the beads means the enzyme can be used over and over again. Fascinating work Year 13! #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Year 5 have been learning all about the trials and tribulations of the Tudors. Recently they have enjoyed a Tudor themed science week, immersing themselves in a variety of practical investigative activities. Firstly, the children have learnt all about Tudor medicine and most agreed they are glad that advances have been made in the way ailments are treated nowadays! Some illnesses were treated with herbal remedies, so the children have planted their own Tudor herb garden. A variety of herbs are currently being cultivated from seed and we are looking forward to watching them grow. After an in-depth study on Henry VIII, we learnt about his successful establishment of a navy fleet. Unfortunately, his favourite ship - the Mary Rose - was sunk and we explored the possible reasons for this. We finished off with some work on buoyancy and carried out fair tests to sink our own Mary Rose models. #TGSTogether #JourneyOfDiscovery #DiscoverTheWorld #TGSPathways #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Year 12 Biology students have recently started a topic on Biochemistry. They used the molymod kits to make models of glucose which they then joined together simulating a condensation reaction to make first, the disaccharide maltose and then the polysaccharide starch. #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool
