This morning our Year 5s held their class assembly to the Prep School and parents. They shared their learning on the topic of Victorians by displaying a variety of class projects and acting as child labourers and Victorian school children. Following their performance, Mrs Butler-Hand invited parents to view the wonderful work that the class have been so busy working on all term. The Year 5s held animated conversations with their grown-ups, proudly presenting the work in their books. What a fantastic start to the week!

The Year 9s have been working on the project 'Grand designs' in maths. They have had to answer the question 'Could you fit enough cans of drink in this room to keep everyone in the school happy for a year?' They started by measuring objects in the class to help with their estimations of the dimensions of the room. This week the pupils have presented their reports to the class either by power point or paper based report and all concluded we would be well stocked for the year!

Year 7 - History of Baghdad Year 7 historians have started the year with an investigation of Baghdad in the 8th and 9th centuries. They have learned about the Islamic world before 750 and why Caliph Al-Mansur chose the location of Baghdad for his new capital. Students then explored the impressive 'Round City' which included defensive walls that were 17 metres high and the Caliph's palace which had a green dome that could be seen as travellers approached the city from afar. Students are now gathering 'treasure' for their 'Baghdad Treasure Boxes' about the treasures found in Baghdad, from impressive architecture to magnificent libraries; from mathematics to medicine.

Today our year elevens have experienced sixth form life. The day has included sessions on careers, universities, the EPQ and student life. In the afternoon, 5 EPQ students presented their work-to-date as preparation for their official submissions within the next fortnight. Topics included - the use of statistics in perception of football, the Mc'Naughten case and its influence on the role of insanity in the justice system, psychopathic traits in Nader-10s, synesthesia - a blessing or curse, and utilitarian and retributivist approaches to capital punishment. Year elevens had to think of, and pose, questions to ask the year thirteen presenters to help build their understanding and learn more about the process. Students closed the day with planning how they would spend the £500 Peter Large Travel Scholarship on offer in the 6th Form - a fantastic opportunity for travel and community contribution!
