The Thetford Grammar School Community

At Thetford Grammar School, we often refer to our school as being a family. We are very proud of the strong sense of belonging that pupils, parents and staff feel towards the school and we frequently meet to celebrate these links and the pupil successes that they foster.

We are united by adherence to our community values of respect, responsibility and resilience as the guiding principles that provide the environment in which pupils can achieve their very best. By uniting efforts between our school, our pupils and our families, we collectively provide a truly triangulated support system.

The sense of belonging to the TGS community is one that lasts, as shown in our alumni association, the Old Thetfordians, some of whom left over 70 years ago. You can also see the lasting attachment that our pupils form to their school in the stories of our leavers below.

Together we are TGS

Last night Harriet in year 9 was invited to attend Nourishing Norfolk's one year celebration with the High Sheriff of Norfolk to celebrate the work they have achieved in their network of food hubs across the county. These food hubs offer people who are struggling with the rising costs of living a local place to shop on a budget and the chance to access the support they need to thrive. Harriet has been a volunteer for nearly a year in the social supermarket in the Charles Burrell Centre helping run the shop each week. 'Responsibility' is one of our school's community values. There are lots of ways that we can demonstrate this quality, and showing a responsibility towards one's community, especially during difficult times, is perhaps one of the most important. There are currently 15 hubs across Norfolk with a goal to open 10 more by June. To achieve their goal, they need Norfolk people to help Norfolk people. There are many ways you can help support, follow this link to find out more: https://www.norfolkfoundation.com/giving-and-philanthropy/back-our-key-initiatives/nourishing-norfolk/nourishing-norfolk-network/ @norfolkcf @Norfolk Community Foundation @charlesburrellcentre @Charles Burrell Centre #boardingschool #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

The Year 5s are thoroughly enjoying their class text this term - Street Child by Berlie Doherty. As part of their literacy work, they have been busy refining their skills of textual prediction to continue the story with their own creative ideas. They all worked really hard to combine the use of vocabulary specific to the Victorian time period, and figurative language to convey the setting and emotive events. The first paragraphs of their creative writing have been displayed in class alongside their watercolour silhouette scenes.

The Year 9s have been working on the project 'Grand designs' in maths. They have had to answer the question 'Could you fit enough cans of drink in this room to keep everyone in the school happy for a year?' They started by measuring objects in the class to help with their estimations of the dimensions of the room. This week the pupils have presented their reports to the class either by power point or paper based report and all concluded we would be well stocked for the year!

Today our year elevens have experienced sixth form life. The day has included sessions on careers, universities, the EPQ and student life. In the afternoon, 5 EPQ students presented their work-to-date as preparation for their official submissions within the next fortnight. Topics included - the use of statistics in perception of football, the Mc'Naughten case and its influence on the role of insanity in the justice system, psychopathic traits in Nader-10s, synesthesia - a blessing or curse, and utilitarian and retributivist approaches to capital punishment. Year elevens had to think of, and pose, questions to ask the year thirteen presenters to help build their understanding and learn more about the process. Students closed the day with planning how they would spend the £500 Peter Large Travel Scholarship on offer in the 6th Form - a fantastic opportunity for travel and community contribution!

Thetford Grammar School offers its sincerest condolences on the passing of Her Majesty the Queen. Her tireless service to, and great care for, her people is an inspiration to us all. Her Majesty was the true embodiment of the values of respect, responsibility and resilience that our community aspires to. Our thoughts are with the Royal Family, who has lost a beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-Grandmother.

"The support and camaraderie that I experienced at TGS allowed me the confidence to pursue a career path that at times felt out of reach, and in my opinion that is the greatest service a school can provide a student. I am forever indebted!”#supportyourschools pic.twitter.com/zrRusElIIt— Thetford Grammar () November 10, 2020
