The Earth (well the floor of the Music Room) shook to the sounds of 14 drummers after school last week as the new cohort of Whack Attack got off to a great start. Mrs Weyers was mightily impressed with everyone’s concentration, learning some tricky rhythms and making sure we were using the correct hands and sticks and also with great team spirit. To quote Oscar when he was picked up ‘I loved it!’ I think we can expect great things from this group! #TGSTogether #JourneyOfDiscovery #Muscians #PrepSchool #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Oxford calling… Madeleine, our current School Captain and editor-in-chief of The Student Circle, has this week been offered a place to study Chemistry at Oxford University from September 2022. After reading a huge number of additional textbooks, going through a series of practice and mock interviews, and undertaking work experience placements at MRC Stem Cell Institute in Cambridge and at the Chemistry Department of Imperial College in London, Maddy was thrilled to receive her offer from Lady Margaret Hall College. Maddy said "Having spent many hours perfecting my personal statement and preparing for interview, I feel very honoured to have been selected for a place. The interview process was challenging but rewarding; it really made me push the boundaries of my A-Level knowledge further". Now, Maddy just has the unenviable task of securing two A*s and an A grade in her A-Level exams before she can take up her place. We would like to congratulate Maddy on this fantastic achievement. #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

This month's artist of the month is Kezia in Year 10 GCSE Art. Kezia has created this work by painting a watercolour self-portrait and then printing an etching of the same image over the top. This work has been inspired by selected artist Guy Denning as part of her coursework and shows great refinement and skill. Great work Kezia! #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #Artists #YoungArtists #Graphics #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Mrs Settle was delighted to welcome teams from each House to Old School for the first House Lit Quiz in a while last week. Enthusiastic responses could be heard as the teams answered questions about The Christmasaurus, Harry Potter, fairy tales, carol lyrics and historical questions in this festive-themed quiz. Second place was closely contested by Cronsheys and Coles with Cronsheys taking the place by half a point. Congratulations to the winning team from Millingtons. The team included James and Lauren from Y6, Jensen & Jonathan from Y7 and Bailey & Dev from Y8. Well done to all those who took part! #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #DiscoverTheWorld #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Cassie in Year 12, and Annie in Year 13 were selected to represent TGS at the 2021 Model European Parliament (MEP). The MEP has been running for over twenty years, with Sixth Formers from all the member countries of the European Union and Accession States meeting twice a year to discuss and debate a variety of current issues that are relevant to countries across the European Union. TGS was invited to send Sixth Form students as part of the United Kingdom’s delegation of five to the 54th international session hosted in Berlin, Germany. This was a great honour, as they have represented our country at international level. Cassie took part on the committee for Agriculture and Rural Development; while Annie was part of the committee for Environmental and Food Safety. Both students have said that the experience has boosted their efficiency and confidence levels and are looking forward to writing up on their experiences. A huge congratulations to both students for their achievements! #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

When in Year 11 last year, Maia entered and won the National Book Tokens design competition. Not only did Maia win the 13 - 16 category but her design was the overall winner and will be available as a book token in bookshops before Christmas. Maia's prize was a book token to spend for herself and £250 for the school. In a visit to Not Just Books in Thetford Maia chose books with fellow students of all ages in mind. Helping her was keen reader Dev who has represented Thetford Grammar School in events such as last year's National Reading Champions Quiz and who also chose books for the Prep School and Senior School libraries. "I'm so pleased for Maia that she was able to combine her artistic skills and love of reading to win this competition" said Mrs Julie Settle, School Librarian, "and I am grateful to her that we can boost the shelves of our two libraries with these new books. It's marvellous that we have such an inviting and inspiring independent book shop just around the corner in Thetford." Mrs Settle expressed her gratitude to Mrs Jane James of Not Just Books for offering a discount to help stretch the tokens further. #TGSTogether #NationalBookTokens #ShopLocal #JourneyOfDiscovery #ExplorationCurriculum #PrepSchool #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool #Thetford

"The support and camaraderie that I experienced at TGS allowed me the confidence to pursue a career path that at times felt out of reach, and in my opinion that is the greatest service a school can provide a student. I am forever indebted!” https://t.co/zrRusElIIt
