Our Year 1 and Year 2 pupils have been busy making greenhouses as part of their plants topic over the past week and hosted an exhibition to show off their hard work. After a visit to Thetford Garden Centre they were tasked with making their own mini greenhouses to house their plants that they purchased. They were given various materials, which they evaluated on their suitability. They then brought their designs to life, ensuring the measurements were correct to give their plants room to grow! The results, we are sure you will agree, have been marvellous. #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Year 5 have been learning about how houses were made in Tudor times. They had a go at making their own Wattle and Daub wall piece using wood and paper straws for the Wattle and a mixture of soil, clay, straw and water for the Daub. We decided not to add the traditional animal dung this time!

Congratulations to our Artist of the Month for January, Lucy in Year 7. Lucy created a 'colour pop' effect using digital editing software as part of her ongoing project on colour. Lucy carefully painted the colours on to the imagery using the colour replacement tool. Beautiful work, Lucy! #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #Artists #YoungArtists #Graphics #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

The Great Debate On the evening of 27th January, Tom and Eliza, supported by fellow Debate Club members Oliver and Hazel, attended The Historical Association's Great Debate in Cambridge. Hosted at the Triangle Centre, and judged by Peter Mandler, Professor of Modern Cultural History at Cambridge University. The motion was 'The 70-year reign of Queen Elizabeth the Second has seen global and widespread changes, including: societal infrastructure, industry, rural life, the environment and ideas. Which changes of the last 70 years have affected your local area the most?' Both pupils performed superbly and responded easily to some vicious questions. Miss Dunsmore, herself a Christ's College alum, described the process in parts as 'like a Cambridge interview.' Tom presented brilliantly on the theme of changes in the make-up of Norfolk's employment opportunities, and he was highly commended for his effective use of data. We are delighted to announce that Eliza won the debate outright, with her perspective on changes to Norfolk's 'fertile fields and beautiful broads.' Eliza will now journey to the national final at Windsor Castle in March. Congratulations to our fabulous debaters, and thanks to Miss Dunsmore and Mr Mitchell for creating this opportunity. A level and GCSE artists were sent a brief to create a logo for Thetford Open Gardens, which will be used for years to come to give the event its own branding. Students studied other logos and created designs which had visual impact. Amelia's logo design has been chosen for Thetford Open Gardens, Qing's has been chosen to be the cover of the program. Miss Griffiths is incredibly proud of both students and the quality of their designs, both whom are considering careers within the arts. Year 8 German students were practising their life and language skills in class shopping for souvenirs. They had to go to the bank first and ask for money, then they went to the market stalls and bought items at sometimes quite outrageous prices. But, after all, we are all a little more generous on holiday, aren’t we. Well done to the whole group! #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

The Earth (well the floor of the Music Room) shook to the sounds of 14 drummers after school last week as the new cohort of Whack Attack got off to a great start. Mrs Weyers was mightily impressed with everyone’s concentration, learning some tricky rhythms and making sure we were using the correct hands and sticks and also with great team spirit. To quote Oscar when he was picked up ‘I loved it!’ I think we can expect great things from this group! #TGSTogether #JourneyOfDiscovery #Muscians #PrepSchool #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Oxford calling… Madeleine, our current School Captain and editor-in-chief of The Student Circle, has this week been offered a place to study Chemistry at Oxford University from September 2022. After reading a huge number of additional textbooks, going through a series of practice and mock interviews, and undertaking work experience placements at MRC Stem Cell Institute in Cambridge and at the Chemistry Department of Imperial College in London, Maddy was thrilled to receive her offer from Lady Margaret Hall College. Maddy said "Having spent many hours perfecting my personal statement and preparing for interview, I feel very honoured to have been selected for a place. The interview process was challenging but rewarding; it really made me push the boundaries of my A-Level knowledge further". Now, Maddy just has the unenviable task of securing two A*s and an A grade in her A-Level exams before she can take up her place. We would like to congratulate Maddy on this fantastic achievement. #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool
