Year 5 recently spent a day at Gressenhall Farm and Workhouse, experiencing what life was like for children 150 years ago. We spent some time practising our handwriting in a Victorian classroom before quickly being put to work on the farm. We were set to work picking up rocks from the field to protect the horse’s hooves, it was backbreaking work but surprisingly fun ... for 5 minutes before we got tired! Then we were sent to help Martha with the laundry and learnt how the Victorians washed their clothes. We worked really hard all day, so we were rewarded with some freshly cooked drop scones, they were surprisingly tasty and Mrs Clackett complemented us all on our manners and behaviour throughout the day. Our day at Gressenhall really helped us to picture what life was like for Victorian children and brought our topic to life.

🌲Our Prep School Councillors did a wonderful job representing TGS on a visit to Thetford Methodist Church. They helped to display crafts that each of our Prep pupils had made, as part of a community exhibition of Christmas themed crafts. The Prep school’s contribution was to create a model in a matchbox to represent what Christmas means to them. The festival will be open to the public at various times during the run up to Christmas.🎄

Year 5 have been busy in Music collaborating over a challenge that had been set by Mrs Weyers. Working together, they were tasked to put the jigsaw pieces of musical notations into the correct order to play the piece they had been learning in a 4-part round. They had huge fun doing this and surprised themselves by how good they were! #music #musician #workingtogether

📚 Year 3 and 4 celebrated Roald Dahl Day this week. During Form Time with Mrs Butler-Hand, the children held animated discussions about the many books that Roald Dahl had written. Matilda and George's Marvellous Medicine were some of the most popular titles amongst the class. The class talked about memorable characters including the Twits and Willy Wonka as well as some of Dahl's inventive word choices like 'snozcumber' and 'frobscottle'. Everyone then enjoyed some time reading for pleasure in the Prep library. 📚 What's your favourite Roald Dahl inventive word? #RoaldDahl

Last night Harriet in year 9 was invited to attend Nourishing Norfolk's one year celebration with the High Sheriff of Norfolk to celebrate the work they have achieved in their network of food hubs across the county. These food hubs offer people who are struggling with the rising costs of living a local place to shop on a budget and the chance to access the support they need to thrive. Harriet has been a volunteer for nearly a year in the social supermarket in the Charles Burrell Centre helping run the shop each week. 'Responsibility' is one of our school's community values. There are lots of ways that we can demonstrate this quality, and showing a responsibility towards one's community, especially during difficult times, is perhaps one of the most important. There are currently 15 hubs across Norfolk with a goal to open 10 more by June. To achieve their goal, they need Norfolk people to help Norfolk people. There are many ways you can help support, follow this link to find out more: https://www.norfolkfoundation.com/giving-and-philanthropy/back-our-key-initiatives/nourishing-norfolk/nourishing-norfolk-network/ @norfolkcf @Norfolk Community Foundation @charlesburrellcentre @Charles Burrell Centre #boardingschool #TGSTogether #TGSPathways #JourneyOfDiscovery #ThetfordGrammarSchool #Norfolk #Suffolk #IndependentSchool #BoardingSchool

Year 11 have been investigating the growth of micro-organisms as part of their topic on communicable disease. They performed 3 experiments using aseptic technique. 1. Where in the lab could they find microbes? 2. Grow just one specie of microbe without getting it contaminated. Using a broth of E.coli, write their initial or a simple picture. 3. Add antibiotic discs to bacteria to see which ones affect the bacterial growth. The clear areas around some of the disc indicate which antibiotics were effective. Here are pictures of their results.

The Year 5s are thoroughly enjoying their class text this term - Street Child by Berlie Doherty. As part of their literacy work, they have been busy refining their skills of textual prediction to continue the story with their own creative ideas. They all worked really hard to combine the use of vocabulary specific to the Victorian time period, and figurative language to convey the setting and emotive events. The first paragraphs of their creative writing have been displayed in class alongside their watercolour silhouette scenes.
